Experts have developed a new method of genetic programming age changes.
Molecular biologists and bioengineers at the University of California San Diego, USA, has discovered key mechanisms of aging.
It is reported that in order to understand how fast and for what reasons aging cells, scientists have turned to baking the yeast Saccharomycescerevisiae. In the study, experts found that cells with the same genetic material and in the same environment can grow old in quite different ways, at different molecular and cellular trajectories.
“Using microhydrodynamic, computer modeling and other methods we found that approximately half of the cells get old in the process of gradual reduction of the stability of the nucleolus, a region in the nuclear DNA, which produces the basic components of protein “factories”. And the other half is aging as a result of dysfunction of the mitochondria-the power plants of cells”, the study says.
According to scientists, the cell enters one of these two paths in his youth, and follows him to death. In trying to understand how she so decides, scientists have identified the molecular processes underlying each route and discovered a molecular circuit which controls the aging of cells, “as the electrical circuit controls the operation of household appliances”.
“Computer simulation helped to reprogram the main molecular scheme, modifying its DNA and create a new route aging with increased life expectancy,” say the researchers.
Based on the discovery biologists plan to develop chemical drugs that can increase life expectancy.
