The UK’s chart tracks sales and streams from 0:00 on a Friday to 23:59 the following Thursday – and Baddiel & Skinner & The Lightning Seeds’ 1996 anthem in support of the England football team outstripped the competition over the last seven days.

The track totalled around 80,000 combined sales this week, made up of 43,000 sales and 12 million weighted streams – of which 6.8 million were audio and 5.2 million were video.

On Wednesday the race was said to be “very close”, but surprisingly fans kept streaming and buying the song even after crashing out of the semi-final.

Baddiel reacted: “Well, this is awkward”, while Skinner added: “I must say, as consolation prizes go…”

Scott Mills, who hosts the Official Chart on BBC Radio One, said: “England gave us everything at this World Cup.

“The whole country got swept away with it, and Three Lions being the Official Number 1 shows how we really got behind our amazing team.”

The song has rocketed up the countdown this week, after being No24 this time last week.

The result nudges George Ezra’s Shotgun down one spot to No2, while Drake’s In My Feelings bows at No4.

Further down the list, Green Day’s American Idiot returns to the chart at No25, in tandem with a campaign amid Donald Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom.

Drake is also Number One on the album chart with Scorpion, eclipsing midweek leader Years & Years’ latest opus Palo Santo – which finishes at No3.

The Greatest Showman soundtrack rallies one place to No2, while George Ezra’s Staying At Tamara’s holds at No4 and Tom Grennan’s Lightning Matches debuts at No5.

Elsewhere the Mamma Mia! soundtrack album rockets to No17 ahead of the sequel’s release next week, and Little Mix’s Glory Days is boosted to No29.

The best-selling compilation of the week is the Love Island soundtrack in partnership with Ministry of Sound.

Three Lions is now likely to plummet from No1 over the coming week, although it may see a small spike tomorrow for England’s Third Place Playoff against Belgium.
