Winds of Winter: Will George RR Martin make THIS change as Game of Thrones season 8 nears?

ASOIAF inspired the smash hit TV show, but the small-screen phenomenon’s storylines overtook their source material some time ago. Now, George RR Martin is still due to put out The Winds of Winter – the sixth of a planned seven books in the series – presumably after the upcoming final season of Game of Thrones has aired. Fans have speculated that his previous updates on the book and the fact it has been delayed so long could point to a major change being made.

Martin has put out sample chapters from The Winds of Winter over recent years – but could it be a distinct possibility that these have been scrapped as part of a major overhaul?

That’s certainly what Reddit user tasteandtest has suggested on the ASOAIF Reddit board; in a post that has had hundreds of engagements and has been 88% upvoted.

They explained: “As you know at the beginning of 2016 George R.R. Martin posted a big update for TWOW on his personal blog. It was like a confession how he couldn’t finish the book in time.

“In this update George said, ‘…my publishers told me, they would need the completed manuscript before the end of October. That seemed very do-able to me… in May. So there was the first deadline: Halloween.’

“According to this there were 6 months for George to finish the book. But then in August he realized it was not going to be done in time so he asked more time and end of the year was the new deadline. Again George was very confident he could do it.

“So we can say that 8 months for finishing the book seemed feasible to George. Let’s being [sic] negative and say George has done only 2 months work in this time interval and there were 6 months work left to do. It was 3 years ago, in other words 36 months have passed since this post.

“It looks kinda weird to me. I want to eliminate some of the possibilities which can explain the delayed release.

“First of all it can be said that Martin tries to add more new chapters to the book. But it is known that from the beginning Martin intended to use all number of pages available because of the accumulated POV characters from AFFC and ADWD. So he can not add more chapters to TWOW.

“And I also don’t give any credit to some talks about Martin may lost his passion for ASOIAF.”

They continued: “Here my theory comes: after George realised the show will be one step ahead of him despite whatever he does, he may [have] felt free to make major structural changes in TWOW.

“In conclusion I think it is very possible that When TWOW is released the course of the book might be much more different from what we have seen in sample chapters than we would expect.”

Indeed, once Martin realised he was not going to get the book out before the TV show, he may have spotted an opportunity to deep-dive more into the structure of the story and rework it entirely.

Or, it could be as simple as he himself has explained: that it’s proven much more complex than he anticipated, and he also has multiple other projects on the boil.

Whatever the case, fans will be hoping for their ASOIAF fix sooner rather than later.
