Spice Girls 2019 reunion: Will there be a new Spice Girls album?
On Monday, November 5, the Spice Girls announced a 2019 reunion, with Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, Melanie Brown and Melanie Chisholm embarking on a six-day tour without Victoria Beckham.
Although the Spice Girls have so far only revealed plans for a reunion tour, fans were quick to speculate whether this would be preceded by a TV special, a new single or even a whole new album.
After all, the last Spice Girls reunion in 2007 saw the band release a new greatest hits album containing new songs Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) and Voodoo.
Here’s what we know so far about whether there will be a new Spice Girls album following the 2019 reunion.
Will there be a new Spice Girls album?
No plans have been revealed for a new Spice Girls album yet.
In a Twitter video on their newly opened account, Emma, Geri, Mel B and Mel C announced a six-date UK tour for 2019, stopping in Manchester, Coventry, Sunderland, Edinburgh, Bristol and London.
Speaking on Loose Women the same day, Mel B said that they are expecting to extend this tour into a world tour.
She said: “The hopes are that we go everywhere else in the world. For right now, it’s just the UK.”
Although she shared some pieces of information that she wasn’t “allowed to say”, she made no mention of new music.
Their last single was Headlines (Friendship Never Ends), which was released in 2007 and saw the five Spice Girls singing on a song together for the first time since 1998.
However, that single underwhelmed in terms of sales when it did not get into the top 10.
In comparison, nine of their previous 10 singles were UK number ones, with 1998’s Stop reaching number two.
However, the single was a top 10 hit in four European countries.
On a 2008 appearance on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Mel C revealed she had been against the band releasing new music during the 2007 reunion, suggesting that she may equally oppose the release of new music in 2019.
Though a new album seems unlikely, however, the 2019 tour could feature new songs.
There is a precedent for this – the Spice Girls’ 1999 tour included a still-unreleased track called W.O.M.A.N.
In 2016, a new song entitled Song for Her was reportedly leaked featuring vocals recorded by Emma, Mel B and Geri when they were considering touring as a three-piece renamed GEM.
However, Geri hinted in an interview with Red magazine the project was abandoned when the 2019 tour plans started to come together.
She said: “I still love the girls, and there are other bits and bobs in the pipeline.”
The Spice Girls 2019 tour starts June 1, 2019
