Rita Ora responds to backlash over new single Girls: 'I have had relationships with women'
The new song, which also features vocals from Charli XCX, Bebe Rexha and Cardi B, is marketed as a “bisexual anthem”, and has been compared to Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl.
Hayley Kiyoko argued that “every so often there come certain songs with messaging that is just downright tone-deaf, which does more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community.”
Kehlani insisted she has “love and respect” for each of the artists but maintained that Girls contains “harmful lyrics”, while Katie Gavin from MUNA said: “I remember being a young confused bisexual kissing girls at slumber parties and getting shamed by other girls for seeming like I was enjoying it too much. I hear those girls in this song.”
Ora has now taken to Twitter to apologise, and give her side of the story.
“Girls was written to represent my truth and is an accurate account of a very real and honest experience in my life,” she said.
“I have had romantic relationships with women and men throughout my life and this is my personal journey.”
She added: “I am sorry how I expressed myself in my song has hurt anyone. I would never intentionally cause harm to other LGBTQ+ people or anyone.
“I have strived to be a contributor to the LGBTQ+ community throughout my entire career and always will be.”
Girls is currently at No18 in the UK midweek charts, in its first week of release.
Ora has previously had big success with Anywhere, Your Song, I Will Never Let You Down and many more.
Earlier this year she teamed up with Liam Payne on the track For You; the lead single from the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack.
She is currently on her UK tour, which will call off in London at the end of the week.
The star’s second studio album has been long delayed, and is now expected later in 2018 – six years after her debut, Ora, hit No1.
She is also rumoured to be returning to The X Factor judging panel, after previously mentoring Louisa Johnson to victory in 2015.
