Queen Elizabeth wears maroon to Commonwealth Day events with Prince Harry and Meghan
Queen Elizabeth, 91, arrived at the Commonwealth Day celebrations wearing a maroon skirt suit and smart jacket. The monarch arrived just moments after her family – Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle.
The Queen looked on as the ceremony began with the national anthem: God Save the Queen. Meghan Markle – Prince Harry’s soon-to-be wife – was spotted singing along as she stood next to her Prince.
After the service, William, Kate, Harry and Meghan will attend a private reception for those involved in the event.
The Commonwealth has played an important role throughout the Queen’s reign, and she takes a special interest in the family of nations.
Harry and Meghan signalled their commitment to the Commonwealth and its people when they both mentioned the institution – which has the Queen as its head – during an interview to mark their engagement.
The prince said they looked forward to travelling around the Commonwealth, meeting some of the 2.4 billion people from the 53 member states.
The Queen arrived on her own. Prince Philip, 96, gave up official engagements earlier this year, following seven decades of loyal service at Her Majesty’s side.
The monarch’s public duties and behind-the-scenes work as head of state continue despite the Queen being 91.
On the throne for more than 65 years, Elizabeth has always made clear it that abdication is not an option.
Meghan arrived with husband-to-be Prince Harry, 33, wearing a white coat and coordinating hat.
The Duchess of Cambridge arrived at the royal event with husband Prince William.
The Duke, 35, guided Kate, who is due to give birth in April, up the steps of Westminster Abbey.
Pregnant Kate wore a navy coat dress, hat and heels with a small clutch bag.
The Commonwealth service was also attended by Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and Theresa May.
