He’s one of the most British characters in fiction, but would have voted Brexit?

As Forever and a Day, the official prequel to Casino Royale, is released next week the author Horowitz admits he’s been asked the burning question.

Speaking with he said: “A journalist asked me yesterday whether Bond would have voted Brexit.

“And I said that I have no idea and wouldn’t say if I did! It’s important not to use Bond to score points.”

The author also revealed that the attitudes presented in his new book, which is set in 1950, are not his own.

He said: “Obviously 1950s Britain is a world away from 2018 and where we are now.

“And it’s very interesting to see how people respond to the book in terms of the type of Britishness which it is promoting.

“Bond captures a chunk of British history – the Cold War, the atomic age.”

Horowitz added: “It’s set five years after the end of the Second World War, and the attitudes aren’t attitudes people have now.”

Speaking with the Telegraph, he said: “There is an awareness in my mind that we live in an age in which people are very quick to take offence.

“Since the last book, that has got – I don’t know what adjective to use – worse? More dangerous? It has become more apparent, more evident.”

He added: “When I’m talking about Bond in public I never ever use the words ‘Bond girl’. That objectifies women and is now offensive.”

“Although it’s hard to find an alternative: ‘Bond’s female associates’ does sound a little bit dry.

“After the success of Trigger Mortis I was more confident about my ability to write in Fleming’s voice.

“But the challenge is to be true to Fleming’s worldview and, while not necessarily to filter it or water it down, to present it in a way that will not cause offence.”

Forever and a Day is released on May 31, 2018.
