Hacker guilty of stealing stars' intimate pics
A man has pleaded guilty to hacking into more than 250 cloud storage accounts, some of which belonged to female celebrities.
George Garofano, from Connecticut, faces up to five years in prison for his part in stealing intimate photos from Hollywood celebrities.
The “celebgate” scandal saw women including Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna targeted by hackers.
Garofano, 26, sent phishing emails that appeared to be from Apple encouraging victims to reveal their iCloud usernames and passwords, prosecutors said.
In some cases, the victims were redirected to fake sites which let them enter their passwords in a form through which they could be retrieved by hackers.
Passwords were then used to access the women’s accounts and steal intimate photographs.
Prosecutors said that in some instances, Garofano traded passwords with other individuals.
The 26-year-old’s lawyer said his “remorseful” client was “a good person who was taken advantage of” by more sophisticated and malicious hackers.
Speaking about the scandal in an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence said she was “just so afraid”.
“I didn’t know how this would affect my career,” she added.
“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory.”
