Game of Thrones: George RR Martin ‘I should have finished Winds of Winter FOUR years ago’
It’s been over seven years since A Dance with Dragons, the latest book in A Song of Ice and Fire was released. And as the Game of Thrones TV show comes to an end next April, having jumped ahead of the books’ narrative, Martin is coming to the end of The Winds of Winter. As Fire and Blood, his new first volume on 300 years of Targaryen history, is released, the 70-year-old has admitted his frustration at not having finished The Winds of Winter. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Martin admitted that finishing Fire and Blood was the thing that excited him the most.
Martin said: “I know there are a lot of people out there who are very angry with me that Winds of Winter isn’t finished. And I’m mad about that myself.
“I wished I finished it four years ago. I wished it was finished now. But it’s not. “And I’ve had dark nights of the soul where I’ve pounded my head against the keyboard and said, ‘God, will I ever finish this? The show is going further and further forward and I’m falling further and further behind. What the hell is happening here? I’ve got to do this.’
“I just got the [Fire and Blood] copy and, holding it in my hand, it’s a beautiful book. The illustrations by Doug Wheatley are great.”
The author continued: “It’s been a long while since I had a new Westeros book and nobody knows that as well as I do.
“I know that just as much as the angriest of my hardcore fans.
“And I have continued to publish other things. It’s not like I’ve been on a seven-year vacation. I have Wild Cards books coming out every six months. “But not like this, one that’s entirely my writing. So to finish a book that I’m proud of and excited by was emotionally a big lift for me.”
Having also interviewed him for Fire and Blood, the Wall Street Journal wrote: “George RR Martin is in hiding. He’s talking to me from a remote mountain hideaway whose location he refuses to disclose.
“It’s a cabin he visits when he wants to hunker down to finish a book — and he’s hard at work on The Winds of Winter, the long-awaited sixth instalment in A Song of Ice and Fire, the fantasy series that spawned HBO’s hugely popular Game of Thrones.”
Fire and Blood is released today.
