Game of Thrones: Cersei pregnancy officially CONFIRMED – And so is her DEATH?
It’s fair to say that it’s wise not to believe anything that comes out of Cersei’s mouth. Her pregnancy bombshell was widely regarded as just another cynical ploy, this time to win the support of estranged brother Tyrion and simultaneously strengthen her position in King’s Landing and rebuild bridges with estranged lover/brother Jaime. Except new copies of the HBO show’s scripts have confirmed she is telling the truth. Which means someting really awful is going to happen.
Vanity Fair just published details of scripts for the critical scene: “When Cersei first tells Jaime about her pregnancy, the script reads: ‘She nods, it’s true. Her happiness is contagious. They get another chance at family. This time with no one standing in their way.’
“And when Tyrion later deduces her secret, the script makes it clear that Cersei is caught off guard. Him finding out was apparently not part of some master plot: ‘Tyrion sees what he sees and knows what it means. He can hardly believe it, but knows it to be true. [. . .] She stays silent for too long, long enough to tell him that he’s right. And once she knows he knows, she can think of nothing else to say.'”
Except, this should be completely impossible.
Fans of the books and the show will already know how many children Cersei should give life to and then lose: “Three for you. Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds.”
That ominous prophecy by Maggie the Frog revealed that the Lannister queen will only ever have three children, all of whom will die. Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen have duly done so.
So how can she be pregnant again?
A previous popular theory suggested that Cersie was actually experiencing the onset of menopause, which she confused with the symptoms of pregnancy. Olenna Tyrell of Highgarden had already warned Cersei that the “change” would be upon her very soon.
It will be devastating for the three-time bereaved mother if this is true. Unfortunately the only other alternative is even worse.
The prophecy has been heavily featured in both the source novels and the small screen adaptation. If the prophecy really is true, the baby can not be born.
Meaning it will die in the womb or the most shocking possibility of all is that Cersei will either be killed while she is still pregnant and both will die – or she and the baby will die during childbirth.
The prophecy also, of course, says the valonquar or “little brother” will do the terrible deed, meaning Tyrion might kill not only his sister but her baby.
It’s a horrific ending, even for a character so hated by so many, but totally in keeping with George RR Martin’s dark and brutal world.
With the release date of Winds of Winter still not confirmed, it looks certain viewers of the show will find out the truth long before Martin reveals it on the page.
