Game of Thrones author George RR Martin reveals his favourite books and TV shows
It comes as no surprise that JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth is a big inspiration for the world of A Song of Ice and Fire.
But now Game of Thrones author Martin has revealed what his favourite books and TV show are, ones that no doubt will have had an effect on his story-telling down the years.
Speaking with The New York Times, he said: “Oh, God, there are so many, past, present and future.
“Favourite books — of course, Lord of the Rings, the science fiction fantasy of Jack Vance, one of my favourite authors, Robert A. Heinlein, whose works I grew up on, cut my teeth on, many other great science fiction and fantasy writers.”
He continued: “Roger Zelazny, who was a mentor of mine who lived in Santa Fe, his masterpiece Lord of Light, many of his other great books, the Amber series, Creatures of Light and Darkness — marvellous, marvellous books.
“But I read a lot of other things, too, beyond science fiction. I mean, I love the work of Bernard Cornwell, who is doing historical fiction.
“Of course, I love The Great Gatsby. I love many mystery novels and thrillers. I’m presently reading and enjoying a lot of the Jack Reacher books of Lee Child, which I just encountered recently.
“I’ve been a big Stephen King fan for, you know, half a century, one of the great writers of our times. So you know — so many books, so little time.”
And when it came to TV Martin praised Breaking Bad and HBO shows, while controversially hailing The Big Bang Theory – which has often been derided in its later seasons.
Martin added: “As for television, I was the first television generation. So I grew up on television, and I still watch it. We’re living in the golden age of television.
“There’s an amazing amount of terrific shows that are on right now, some which Game of Thrones is competing for in the Emmys, shows like Better Call Saul, and before it, Breaking Bad, filmed here in Albuquerque.
“HBO does incredible shows — The Sopranos, Rome, The Deuce. I love all of those, love some comedies. Big Bang Theory, I think is my favourite current comedy.“
He said: “Oh, I would probably — the free city of Braavos in Essos would be a cool place to live.”
According to the Game of Thrones Wiki, Braavos is “is the northern-most, the richest, and arguably the most powerful of the Free Cities.
“Described as a city of seafarers and master swordsmen, Braavos consists of hundreds of tiny islands connected by stone bridges.”
