Ed Sheeran receives MBE from Prince Charles as he reveals secret to his success
The award-winning celebrity, whose latest album Divided spent more than 15 weeks at the top of the charts, received the honour during a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony.
From sleeping on Jamie Foxx’s sofa as a budding musician to performing to tens of thousands of fans worldwide, the 26-year-old has come a long way since he released his debut album in 2011.
He has notched up three chart topping singles, won a Grammy Award last year and his latest track Perfect – newly reworked as a duet with Beyoncé Knowles – is expected to become his next Number 1 this week.
Sheeran has worked with a range of charities including East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, an organisation he supports as an ambassador and has the Duchess of Cambridge as its royal patron.
He has also been named as the biggest star on YouTube in the UK in 2017, topping the site’s most popular video lists for the year.
Also recognised during the investiture ceremony is Tony Hawks, the comedian, who was awarded an MBE for his charity work in Moldova where he has opened a children’s centre to help youngsters with chronic conditions.
Sandra Major, the senior caseworker of backbench Labour MP Jo Cox who was with the politician when she was murdered, was awarded an MBE for parliamentary services and services to the community in Batley and Spen.
The singer-songwriter’s career took off after the release of his debut CD in 2011 and since that time the 26-year-old musician has notched up three number one singles, along with three chart topping albums.
His songwriting skills have seen him collaborate with artists like Taylor Swift and he penned the hit Love Yourself for Justin Bieber and has also worked with US rapper Eminem.
Asked about the secret of his success, he played down his achievements saying: “I think it’s persistence.
“I don’t have a vast amount of talent compared to other people, I think talent is like 30 per cent of it and persistence, drive and self belief are the other ones, which I guess are all the same thing.”
Charles was impressed by the musician’s globe-trotting activities as he was due to fly to New York later for a gig on Friday.
Sheeran, who looked smart in a morning suit, said about his brief chat with the prince: “He was asking me if I was still selling lots of records and I told him I’ve got a concert in New York tomorrow, and he was quite surprised I was flying after this.”
