“I wear his designs to award ceremonies,” says Christine of Bao Ta, who designed this fabulous backless frock
Actress and singer Christine, 27, stars in the new West End show Hamilton: An American Musical.
She has also appeared in stage productions of West Side Story, Sweet Charity and From Here To Eternity, has toured with tenor Andrea Bocelli and was part of classical girl group Zyrah Rose. Originally from the Philippines, she now lives in London.
How would you describe your style? I’d say it was feminine and sexy but when I put on clothes I feel like I’m different versions of myself. I can be sporty, glam or simple and casual.
What colours and shapes suit you best? People wear a lot of dark colours in London, which always works, but I also love pinks and nudes and I think mustard works really well against Asian skin. I tend to wear tight, fitted clothes and I like high-waisted jeans and crop tops as I’m an athletic, square shape and they make me look a bit more curvy.

She’s fond of crop tops, including this pink Motel number, her blue one from H&M and a lace design by Bao Ta London
I don’t really wear accessories,” says the singer. “I’m not very good at it.”
However, she does like her earrings and wore her gold pair on Britain’s Got Talent last year when she performed as part of girl group Zyrah Rose

Tell us what Hamilton is about… It’s a hip-hop revolutionary musical about Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers. Which sounds boring – but the show is the most incredible, exciting piece of theatre and writing that I’d seen in a really long time. It doesn’t matter if you’re five or 80 years old, everyone will enjoy it. The themes it tackles are very relevant to today, too. In act one I play the youngest Schuyler sister, Peggy, then in act two I transform into Alexander’s mistress, Maria Reynolds. The two women are very different but very exciting to play.
What are your costumes like? Big, beautiful dresses with corsets and the amount of detail on them is stunning. They’re quite substantial but what you wear helps to build your character.
What is the best costume you’ve worn for a role? When I did Here Lies Love at the National Theatre I wore a gorgeous dress with butterfly-style sleeves made by a Filipino designer. I love modern clothes with a touch of Oriental design.
And the worst? For the same show I had to be on stage in some really unflattering underwear, which I also had to dance in.
What is your favourite fashion era? The Roaring 20s. I love how flirty, feminine and opulent the clothes, hair and make-up were. I wish we still dressed like that.
Who is your style icon? Beyoncé. But I also love Pia Wurtzbach, the Filipino beauty queen who won Miss Universe a couple of years ago. She’s stunning and I think her style is awesome.
Do you own more high street or high end? High street for sure. I like to wear stuff that looks expensive but definitely isn’t. Topshop and Zara are my favourite stores.
Do you have any favourite designers? I love Bao Ta London. He’s a Vietnamese designer. I’ve worn his designs for performances and awards ceremonies. If money was no object I’d buy loads of ball gowns by Michael Cinco and sleep in them. I’d also love a Céline luggage bag.
Do you own anything vintage? I’ve a vintage Céline bag that I bought from eBay.
What is the oldest item in your wardrobe? A Roberto Cavalli gown with a print like a Chinese vase, which I bought off a friend.
Are you a hoarder or do you clear out your wardrobe regularly? I did a big cleanse and got rid of three-quarters of my clothes when I moved house earlier this year. It felt so good. I’d recommend it to anyone. When I moved to the UK I shipped about 60kg of stuff from Hong Kong but it all got lost in the process. That was more of a forced cleanse.
What is the most expensive item in your wardrobe? My dad is very into designer clothes and he bought me a beautiful patent purple Louis Vuitton bag. I never find the occasion to use it, though, as it’s very dressy but big. I’m going to save it until it becomes vintage.
How much do you spend on clothes each month? Probably on average between £100 and £200 but sometimes nothing at all. I buy most of my clothes online and sometimes might spend about £300 but return everything.
How many shoes and handbags do you own? Not that many, especially after the cleanse. I’ve about six pairs I wear regularly and maybe another 10 hidden away. I probably have five or six handbags, but I prefer clothes to accessories.
What is your best beauty secret? There are some tricks I wish more people knew about, such as applying castor oil to your eyebrows and lashes to make them grow thicker and using Dr Pawpaw balm for everything.
What is the best piece of fashion advice you have been given? Treat clothes like armour or a costume to portray who you’re going to be that day. Also, dress for yourself, no one else.
Hamilton is on at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre from Wednesday. See hamiltonthemusical.co.uk.
