Cheryl responds to claims her new comeback song Love Made Me Do It is about Liam Payne
Speculation has raged in the media that the track – due for release this Friday – is about the father of her child, Bear.
But speaking on Jessie Ware’s podcast Table Manners, she revealed that her music is about nobody in particular.
And in fact, she confirmed that the song was written and recorded before the pair split up.
“That’s the easiest thing for them to write,” she said of the headlines.
“But actually all the music and all the songs that I’ve done were done way before we split.
“None of them are about anybody.”
She also revealed the opening lyrics to the single, which are: “I’ve fallen hard like a million times, on number seven of my nine lives, the ink on my skin is all the places I’ve been.”
Ware asked her if she’s nervous to make her return after four years away.
“I’m just happy to do be doing it again,” Cheryl answered.
“I’m not nervous about it. I don’t feel pressure, I just feel excited.”
Since the star last released music in 2014, streaming has come to dominate music consumption – and it’s completely changed the way tracks are released and promoted.
As such, she hasn’t committed to an album release date just yet.
“I haven’t been around since streaming has been around,” she said. “Literally as I left, it came. So I don’t know really yet the way things are going to be received.
“I’ve got a body of work, but I haven’t said, ‘now I’m going to release the album’. I’m just going to go song by song.”
After the track’s release on Friday, she is reported to be returning to The X Factor for a performance on November 18.
Earlier this week, she said in a statement: “I just made the music from a really pure place, music simply for the love of it.
“I thought, if I don’t know what I’m doing by now, then I don’t know what I’m doing in this industry.”
The 35-year-old has bagged five number one hits as a solo artist: Fight For This Love, Promise This, Call My Name, Crazy Stupid Love and I Don’t Care.
As part of Girls Aloud she hit the spot four times and notched up 20 Top 10 hits.
Love Made Me Do It by Cheryl is out on Friday. Table Manners by Jessie Ware is available on major podcast platforms.
