Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen legend Brian May reveals how iconic song got its name
The track has sold more than six million copies worldwide and is one of the most famous songs of all time. It’s peaked at No1 in the UK, No2 in the US and in 2004 it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. At just under six minutes long, it’s nothing short of epic.
Speaking in an interview to promote the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, Brian May was asked how the song got its name.
“It came later [after the song was written], I do know that,” he said.
“It didn’t have a title for a lon gtime.
“We wrote on the books, Freddie’s Cowboy Song, or something like that.”
He added: “We imagined it was going to be called Mama Killed A Man or something.
“And then Freddie went, ‘no, I’m calling it Bohemian Rhapsody. And we said, ‘…oh.’”
Mercury wrote the song in London and it went on to become one of Queen’s defining hits.
Rami Malek plays Mercury in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, which has done well at the box office despite middling reviews.
May is played by Gwilym Lee, with Roger Taylor played by Ben Hardy and Joe Mazzello playing John Deacon.
Aidan Gillan, Allen Leech, Lucy Boynton, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers are also on board.
Mercury passed away in November 1991 at the age of 45.
Bohemian Rhapsody is out now.
