The soundtrack to the hit film, which hit all cinemas except Vue last week, has soared straight to number one.

The Official Charts Company confirmed tonight that the record, for which Gaga wrote some new original material, finished a hairline in front of Twenty One Pilots’ third album Trench – which settles for number two.

This marks Gaga’s fourth time at the top of the UK album chart, after she previously went all the way with her first three studio records: The Fame, Born This Way and ARTPOP.

If this goes down in the record books as one of “her” albums, it means she is now tied fifth place for the female solo artist with the most chart-toppers in this country.

First is Madonna with 12, followed by Barbra Streisand with seven – of which one is her own A Star Is Born soundtrack from 1977.

Kylie Minogue is in third with six, and Celine Dion is in fourth with five.

Gaga’s four puts her level with Diana Ross and Rihanna, and separates her from a raft of artists who all have three.

Kate Bush, Eva Cassidy, Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, Susan Boyle, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift each have their own trilogy of chart-toppers.

Elsewhere on the chart, Rod Stewart’s Blood Red Roses surrenders the top spot and slips to No3 in its second week.

The Greatest Showman’s soundtrack continues to stubbornly hang around in the Top 5, now at No4, and Eminem’s Kamikaze drops one spot to No5.

You Me At Six score their fifth Top 10 with VI, new at No6; while other Top 20 bows come from Echo and the Bunnymen, Lil Baby & Gunna and KT Tunstall.

A box-set reissue of John Lennon’s Imagine zooms it back into the charts at No19.

Over on the singles chart, Dave feat. Fredo are straight in at No1 with Funky Friday, nudging Calvin Harris and Sam Smith’s Promises down to No2.

Marshmellow and Bastille drop one to No3 with Happier, while Kanye West and Lil Pump are at No4 with I Love It.

Rita Ora completes the Top 5 with Let You Love Me, up one spot.

A Star Is Born’s most popular song, Shallow, gives Gaga her best singles chart placement in five years; up to No6.
